Goodeiden

Splitfins in the Haus des Meeres

The international "Goodeid Working Group"

Splitfins or Goodeids inhabit in approximately 40 species an arid area in the heart of Mexico, the Mesa Central, where they partly live in small bodies of water like springs and pools. The distribution range of most of the species is at a high altitude; frost by night in winter and temperatures of about 30°C by day are common. Therefore the animals are quite tolerant towards fluctuation in temperature.

From the viewpoint of biologists, these fish are highly interesting because they have a particular way of parental care: They are livebearing and have got special structures on the belly of the fry and in the abdominal cavity of the females, having similar function like umbilical cord and placenta in us humans.

Many species are endangered in their existence by environmental sins like building projects, water pollution, the growth of large cities and the ruthless dealing with water. Two species are existing only in captivity, another seems to be extinct. Three-fourths of the species are threathened so much, that only a solid taking under protection gives them a chance to survive.

The Haus des Meeres is cooperating intensively in the conservation of this endangered group of fish.  At instigation of the Haus des Meeres, together with other zoos, universities, organisations ans hobbyists, the Goodeid Working Group has been founded in May 2009 in Denmark. On international level, management-, monitoring- and breeding programmes are being developed to assure the surviving of these lovely and interesting fish.

The Haus des Meeres has launched several activities for the conservation of Goodeids:

In the exhibition, a tank with 250 liters has been dedicated to Goodeids, showing three species. Information panels point to the threat of this group of fish and inform about the goals of the Goodeid Working Group.

Another panel on the same floor, but placed on other position, has been installed for the same reason.

Media have been informed about this project, articles and posts have been written, and on Goodeids had been the focus at a species conservation day in the Haus des Meeres.

As other consequence, the responsible curator moderates the regional group "Austria" of the Goodeid Working Group with about 15 interested and active members.

In addition, the Haus des Meeres has build up a breeding station on the 6th floor, comprising more than 70 husbandry-tanks with 60 up to 200 liters, and 20 smaller breeding-tanks. The regularly controlled parameters of the water and the values are:

Temperature 18 (in winter) to 26°C (in some tanks in summer)/ pH  8,1/ carbonate hardness 7°dH/ total hardness 12° dH.

The nitrate test, taken once a week, says less than 25 mg. The fish are fed once a day with premium flakefood and newly hatched Artemia-Nauplias.

The surplus is being offered to interested zoos and members of the Goodeid Working Group.

For the moment, the Haus des Meeres breeds the subsequent species. After the species-name in latin, there comes the location-name in brackets, thereafter the number of males, females and fry, separated with colons.

The number of species and fish is being updated every two weeks.
