Mediterranean Sea Animals

The Mediterranean Sea is a very popular holiday destination, however tourism is what significantly destroys the sea biosphere. Rapid increase of algae (algal bloom) can be harmful to animals and cause even fish die-offs. Algae are decomposed by bacteria, resulting in marine snow which settles on the sea bottom and harms the ecosystem.

Sponges are original representatives who lack tissues, organs and muscles. They have internal skeletons of spongin which is used in bathrooms as a sponge.

Sea anemone species are related to jellyfish, have small venom vesicles and an external sensory hair. A touch to the hair causes a cell explosion. That launches a harpoon-like structure which gets attached to the prey and injects venom.

The Mediterranean fanworm has two-layered crown which it used to catch and feed on plankton.

From Crustaceans you can see Lobsters and Hermit crabs in the Haus des Meeres. They all shed their skin as they grow. In the course of multiple skin shedding one leg can be even completely renewed.

In the group of Echinoderms there belongs starfish, sea urchin and sea cucumber.

Sea urchin – in case the spine penetrates human skin, it causes painful wound.

Octopuses are molluscs, as well as scallops and snails. An expulsion of ink is one of the defence techniques before predators.

Moray eel are not particularly aggressive and their venomousness is still a speculation. However their blood is toxic – that’s a fact.

Due to commercial fishery sea breams have become rare.

Typical predatory fish living at the sea bottom is the Scorpanea. Unintentional stepping on the fish causes painful wounds through its venomous spines. However it doesn’t put a human’s life in danger.
