After Invasion of the Dark

On the evening of the 5th of December 2006 Mozart’s Requiem was supposed to be played over the roofs of Vienna in the direction of St. Stephan’s Dome from all 3 of Vienna’s old air defence towers. These include the tower in Augarten, in Arenbergpark and Esterhazypark. It was also planed to send bundled LASER light onto the tip of St. Stephens dome from all 3 towers. Unfortunately however our tower was the only one to play Mozart’s Requiem, which was an unbelievable experience, and the district major, as well as roughly 300 visitors, were impressed. Here the explanation of the organiser in part: The so-called „Flaktürme“ (anti aircraft towers) are steel and cement monolithic monstrosities that are imprinted into Vienna’s visual being. In this image they build a topographical triangle with each tower acting as one of three corners and St. Stephens dome in the centre. Originally erected as air defence and air bunkers for surrounding inhabitants they acted as protection for civilians from bomb attacks in the Second World War. After the war the towers were supposed to be covered with marble plates and act as a memorial for National Socialism.
