Foundation board

In 2012, the question arose as to whether the corporate structure of the "Big Association" at that time met the future requirements of the HAUS DES MEERES. The main question was how we could best secure not only our past achievements but also our future projects. For this purpose, a "non-profit private foundation" was established at the end of 2012. The newly founded HAUS DES MEERES – AQUA TERRA ZOO GmbH and HAUS DES MEERES – BETRIEBS GmbH, which has existed since 2007, were then incorporated into the foundation.

On the one hand, this ensured that the intention of the association's founders in 1957 to become a central place for encounters and marine research was met and, on the other hand, it provided a better way to secure large-scale projects and further expansions. The new tasks of the founding association, which now operates under the name HAUS DES MEERES – SCIENCE AND RESEARCH and which, like the FREUNDE DES HAUS DES MEERES association, remains part of the HAUS DES MEERES family, was primarily founded with emphasis on science and research.

The purpose of the non-profit foundation is to promote animal and nature conservation as well as popular education in these areas, by ensuring the continued existence, by the preservation and by the further development of HAUS DES MEERES with all its current and future facilities.

Of course, the financial security of the assets dedicated to the foundation is also included in the purpose. From its assets, the foundation supports, among other things, the animal shelter housed in the HAUS DES MEERES as well as grants and scholarships that are awarded awarded by the HAUS DES MEERES - SCIENCE AND RESEARCH association.

The foundation board members, foundation honorary members and the foundation advisory board carry out their activities on a voluntary basis. The aim of the non-profit private foundation is to enable visitors to experience sensitive biotopes in the biosphere as close to nature as possible. The flak tower museum, however, is intended to shine a light on the former purpose of the tower. What served to protect the population towards the end of the Second World War has been put to good use and transformed into an oasis of nature in the middle of the city with the most wide-ranging view of Vienna for more than 800,000 visitors a year. A viewing terrace, a restaurant, a cafeteria, and a shop make your stay a special experience on all levels.
